Garden Maintenance
Hedge Trimming & Topiary
Crisp lines, dense growth and healthy hedges - trimmed on a schedule that suits each species, not just when they get out of hand.
Hedges that frame the whole garden
A well-kept hedge sets the tone for the entire property. We trim formal hedges, privacy screens and topiary across Melbourne’s South East, from low Buxus borders on period homes to tall Lilly Pilly screens on boundary fences.
Good hedging is about timing and technique as much as sharp tools. We trim each species when it responds best, keep the base slightly wider than the top so light reaches the lower foliage, and keep an eye out for problems like psyllids on Lilly Pilly or scorch after a hot spell.

How it works
Our Process
Assess
We look at the species, height, access and health of each hedge, and what look you want - sharp and formal, or soft and natural.
Schedule
Formal hedges usually need two to four trims through the growing season. We build them into your maintenance plan so they never get away from you.
Trim & tidy
Hedges are trimmed to clean lines, clippings are raked and removed, and paths and lawns are blown clean before we leave.
Good to know
Hedging across the South East
Stonnington & Boroondara
Formal Buxus and Murraya hedges on period homes need frequent, precise trims to hold their shape. This is some of the most detailed work we do.
Stonnington servicesBayside
Salt winds can burn hedges near the coast. Tough species like Westringia (coastal rosemary) and Pittosporum handle exposure far better than Buxus.
Bayside servicesGlen Eira
Fast-growing screening hedges on newer builds often need regular height control to stay dense and manageable.

Did an excellent job, professional, prompt, great customer service and communication. Fantastic quality of work! Would recommend.
Joe and his team are excellent. Great operators, always easy to communicate with. Punctual, tidy and effective. I would highly recommend.
I've had Joe and his team over to my property twice now, and both times they've done an outstanding job. They worked efficiently, left everything spotless, and most importantly, really listened to what I was after. The work was done to a high standard, and their pricing was very fair for the quality of service provided. If you're looking for a reliable, professional, and genuinely skilled gardening team, I'd highly recommend Joe.
FAQ
Hedging & Topiary FAQs
- How often should hedges be trimmed?
- Formal hedges such as Buxus and Murraya usually need two to four trims across the growing season (spring to early autumn) to keep crisp lines. Informal screens often only need one or two trims a year.
- When is the best time to trim hedges in Melbourne?
- Most trimming happens from spring to early autumn while hedges are actively growing. Avoid heavy cuts during heatwaves, which can scorch freshly exposed foliage. Hard renovation of overgrown broadleaf hedges is best in late winter or early spring.
- Can you fix an overgrown or patchy hedge?
- Usually, yes. Most broadleaf hedges (Lilly Pilly, Viburnum, Photinia, Murraya) reshoot well after a staged hard prune combined with feeding. Conifer hedges such as cypress generally won’t regrow from bare brown wood, so they need a different approach - we’ll tell you honestly what’s possible.
- Do you take away the green waste?
- Yes. All clippings and prunings from our visit are taken away. We can also use your green bin if you prefer, to save on waste removal fees. Removal of large piles of existing green waste can be arranged for an additional fee.
